Fable 5.1: The Model You Do Not Have to Watch
Fable 5.1 writes the least code it can, asks before it fixes things, and produces merges I will take without reading. Set against GPT-6 Astra, which is strong at the opposite job. 8.8 out of 10.
Fable 5.1 is the model I do not have to worry about. That is the entire pitch and it is worth more than any benchmark I could point at.
It writes as little code as possible
This is my favourite thing about it, and almost nothing else does it. Ask for a fix and you get the fix. Not a refactor attached to the fix, not three helpers you did not ask for, not a rewrite of the surrounding file because it preferred a different shape.
I put "write the minimum" in my instructions for every model. Some of them ignore it completely and invent their own code anyway. Fable 5.1 follows it, and it turns out that a model which respects that one line is a fundamentally different thing to work with.
It reads your skills and takes your tone
You point it at your skills and it uses them. You tell it how to talk and it talks that way. Both of those sound like table stakes and neither one is, because plenty of models treat your setup as a suggestion and then drift back to their defaults by the third message.
It asks before it fixes
Say I have a bug in some HTML. Fable finds it and tells me. "I found a bug, do you want me to fix it?" Then it waits.
That is exactly how I want a model to behave. It noticed, it told me, and it left the decision with me. Other models find the same bug and simply rewrite the file, and now I am reviewing a change I never asked for on top of the one I did.
I merge it without reading it
The real measure is what I do with the output. With Fable 5.1 I will take a merge without reading it and be confident it is good, because fitting a change into code that already exists is the hard part and this is where it is strongest. The result reads like it was always there rather than like a patch someone stapled on.
I do not extend that trust to any other model, and I am aware of what a big statement that is.
Against GPT-6 Astra
These two are both excellent and they are excellent at opposite things, so it is worth being precise about the split.
Astra wants a contained environment, a clear set of skills, instructions on how to write code, and, absurdly, some encouragement. Give it all of that and it excels at long-running work while burning remarkably few tokens. It is a workhorse once you have built the pen it runs in.
Fable 5.1 needs none of that scaffolding and is the one I trust unsupervised. Astra has a streak in it, a willingness to decide your HTML was wrong and rewrite it. Fable does not. If the job is a long grind inside a well-defined box, Astra. If the job is code I am going to ship without reading it twice, Fable.
The verdict: 8.8/10
I rate Fable 5.1 8.8 out of 10.
It is extremely smart, it is a pleasure to work with, and it is the model I hand real work to. I went back and forth between 8.5 and 9 and landed in the middle, which is a sign of how little I have to complain about.
